This black and white photograph captures a woman and boy in a Mexican restaurant in Los Angeles, sometime in the mid-20th century. I'm thinking about Frank, the photographer, and how he might have felt drawn to this scene. A woman with her eyes closed, maybe tired or lost in thought. The boy to her left, with a cigarette between his lips, looks like he is trying to look cool but there is something about his eyes that suggests otherwise. What were they talking about? I wonder if they were aware of being watched, if they noticed Frank quietly raising his camera and snapping the shot. It’s funny, photography captures a particular moment in time, but it also invites so many narratives, possibilities, and interpretations. We become implicated, as viewers, in a story that continues to unfold across generations, a conversation between the photographer, his subjects, and us.
