"Die Ruhe auf der Flucht nach Ägypten" or "The Rest on the Flight into Egypt", was made by Camillo Procaccini in the late 16th, early 17th century. During the Counter-Reformation, artists were encouraged to create images which would inspire piety and religious devotion in the viewer. Procaccini's delicate red chalk drawing depicts Mary, Jesus, and Joseph during their flight to Egypt. This intimate portrayal of the Holy Family transcends a simple biblical narrative, presenting us with a tender, human moment of rest and reflection. The drawing is significant for its departure from traditional representations. Mary is not just a religious icon, but a mother, seated and holding her child. Joseph stands nearby. This challenges the established hierarchies within religious art, inviting viewers to connect with the subjects on a more personal level. Through its delicate lines, this drawing prompts reflection on family, faith, and the search for peace in times of adversity.
