This is Georges Valmier’s "Composition, Motif Decoratif", made sometime in the early 20th Century, where the flat shapes collide and hover, like elements in a cosmic game of chance. I can imagine Valmier, in his studio, pushing these forms around, searching for a balance. It's like he's speaking in shapes, not words! The paint isn't thick, more like washes, allowing the colors to breathe and the composition to remain light and airy. The dark, almost sinister circle, is offset by the optimism of the blue lozenge beneath – it feels playful. It reminds me of some of Léger’s work, where everyday objects are distilled into essential forms. These artists were all in conversation, using abstraction to find new ways of representing the modern world. It’s a puzzle, a poem, a dance, all rolled into one.
