Anton Romako’s “Bildnis des Malers Berthold Winder” captures a fellow artist with oils on canvas. You can see Romako applying his materials using the traditional techniques of painting, in short controlled brushstrokes, and areas of thin paint application. But look closer at how the inherent qualities of the oil paint have been used to convey a sense of reality. The soft blending captures the soft texture of Winder’s beard and hair and the way light falls upon his face, bringing him to life before us. The loose brushwork describing the coat and clothing is in stark contrast to the detail of the face. Painting wasn't just about capturing likeness; it was a social activity, a way for artists to connect and collaborate. Romako captures not just Winder's appearance but something of his spirit, his creative essence. By looking closely at the materials and the making, we get a sense of the artist's intent, his relationship to his subject, and the broader cultural context in which they both worked. This approach encourages us to move beyond traditional art history and appreciate the value of art, craft and design.
