This is John Hudson’s photographic print “Gezicht op Causeway”, a somewhat faded view of the Causeway Coast. Hudson invites us to experience the sublime meeting of land and sea, a popular subject during a time of burgeoning tourism. The late 19th century saw a rise in the commercialization of landscape photography, aligning with increasing colonial endeavors and scientific explorations. How do these images not only capture, but also construct our understanding of nature? Consider the politics embedded in landscape photography. Whose perspectives are prioritized? What stories remain untold? How does this romantic portrayal of the Causeway Coast contend with its complex history of migration, conflict, and cultural exchange? Here, Hudson encourages us to contemplate our relationship with nature, inviting reflection on the stories, histories, and lived experiences intertwined within it.
