Hans Memling painted this oil on wood, ‘Madonna and Child Enthroned with Two Angels’, likely in the 1480s. The Virgin Mary sits under a canopy, holding her child. Notice the apple offered by the angel to the left. The apple appears innocently, but it is a profound reference to original sin. Reaching back to antiquity, we see similar offerings in the form of libations or sacrifices, made in an attempt to appease the gods or influence fate. The motif has echoes in classical antiquity, yet it also has a life of its own here, imbued with layers of Christian theology. In the collective consciousness, this imagery evokes a sense of longing for redemption. The emotional power of this image lies in its ability to tap into our deepest fears and hopes, engaging viewers on a subconscious level. The cyclical progression of this symbol has resurfaced, evolved, and taken on new meanings in different historical contexts.
