This drawing, Verliefde ketellapper, is by Wilhelmus Johannes Steenhoff and it’s in the Rijksmuseum. It’s done with a pencil on paper. You can see how the hand moves, how the marks build up slowly, carefully, creating a presence out of simple lines. Look at how the hat is suggested, almost like a memory of a hat, not quite complete, but with enough detail to give you the idea. Then there’s the face, with all those lines around the mouth and eyes. Are they wrinkles of worry, or are they the traces of a life well-lived? It's hard to tell and that’s what's so great about it. The way the artist captures the texture of the hair, those curly wisps escaping from under the hat, it’s so delicate, so full of character. And then there’s the slightly smudged quality, the little imperfections that make it feel so human. It reminds me a bit of some of the quick portrait sketches by Van Gogh, where the process of looking and seeing becomes the real subject. It’s a reminder that art doesn't always need to be about grand statements, it can be about the quiet, intimate moments of observation.
