Editor: Here we have Requena Nozal's "Nocturno 1," created in 2015, using acrylic paint and matter-painting techniques, it has an almost celestial quality, a rich red circle set against a dark background. What strikes you when you look at this piece? Curator: Initially, the interplay of textures is captivating. Note the smooth, seemingly reflective ground juxtaposed with the impasto technique used to build up the circular form above. This textural contrast serves to create visual tension and a haptic quality, encouraging a phenomenological response. How does the geometry impact your interpretation? Editor: The stark contrast between the geometric shapes and the textured paint makes me think of order imposed on chaos, or vice-versa, but I can’t quite articulate how. Curator: Consider the function of colour here. The dominant red evokes passion and energy, a life force perhaps. However, observe the use of gold leaf within that circle. It adds a layer of complexity, hinting at decay or transformation through the use of a precious, yet inherently fragile, material. What feelings are invoked as you regard the monochrome field around it? Editor: I notice how the black area makes the red circle appear to float, maybe with that contrast it represents night. Overall, I am stuck with a sensation of stillness mixed with the vibrancy of color. Curator: Indeed, the stillness you perceive might be a function of the balanced composition, achieved through simple shapes, with its dynamic textures hinting at inner movement. How might we understand this work outside of mere representational art? Editor: Looking at the abstract forms and how the artist uses paint, I feel less inclined to search for any narrative beyond the pure visual experience, the contrast between forms is quite evocative in and of itself. Curator: I agree. Through formalist inquiry and detailed investigation of material qualities, it helps us find deeper appreciation for what is visually happening.
