Edouard Adelot created this photograph, *Landschap met drie bomen*, at the beginning of the twentieth century. The trees in this landscape are bent over as if buffeted by a strong wind. They remind me of the paintings of Van Gogh, where every mark is a record of energy and emotion. I wonder what it was like for Adelot to be out there, in the fields, with his camera, waiting for the right moment to capture this scene. Maybe he felt a sense of empathy for the trees, bending but not breaking in the face of adversity. It makes you think about your own resilience, and the way nature reflects our inner states. Painters and photographers are always in dialogue with each other. It’s a constant push and pull. We try to capture something essential about the world, something that words can’t quite express. It is a conversation across time, inspiring one another to see the world in new and surprising ways.
