This photograph of Else Moos-Wachenheimer in dark clothing with a light collar was taken in Lugano in 1924 by an anonymous photographer. I like to think about what Else might have been thinking when she sat for this portrait. Was she nervous? Self-conscious? Did she know what was happening in the darkroom? I'm drawn to the directness of her gaze. She seems confident and composed. The soft focus and muted tones give the image a sense of timelessness. It also makes me think about the photographer, who is unknown to us. They must have had a vision for this portrait, a desire to capture something essential about Else. What were their intentions? What were the conversations they might have had as they worked? The exchange of ideas, the inspiration, and the way we build on each other's creativity is the lifeblood of art. It leaves an enduring impact on how we see and interpret the world.
