This tile tableau by De Porceleijne Fles depicts a scene of Aeterna Juventas, or Eternal Youth. The central figure, a classical maiden holding a flower, embodies this timeless ideal, drawing from ancient Greco-Roman concepts of idealized beauty and immortality. Observe how this motif resonates across time. The pursuit of eternal youth is a recurring theme, echoing in alchemical quests for elixirs of life and the Fountain of Youth explored by explorers. The flower she carries, a symbol of ephemeral beauty, is an enduring symbol found in Botticelli's 'Primavera', where Flora scatters blossoms, and in vanitas paintings, where wilting flowers serve as memento mori. This tableau reminds us that the dream of eternal youth, while unattainable, persists as a powerful psychological force, an expression of our collective desire to transcend mortality and leave a lasting legacy. The artist taps into this deep, subconscious yearning, engaging us on a profound emotional level. The concept of Eternal Youth is not linear but cyclical, constantly resurfacing, evolving, and taking on new meanings as it is reinterpreted by each generation.

This tableau is built up of both painted and pressed tiles, along with some tiles and a plaque in relief. It was made specially for an international exhibition in Antwerp in 1885, where it won a gold medal. The inscriptions LABOR, REQUIES, and AETERNA JUVENTAS (work, rest, and eternal youth) and the painted decorations refer to the various stages of human life, with the Four Seasons as the background.
