Here we see a small etching of a standing man, created by Jacob Hoolaart in the 18th century. During this era, the Dutch Republic was experiencing a period of economic decline. It's also known as the 'Periwig era' because of the popularity of periwigs among men of status. The man in the etching, with his simple attire and hat, seems to represent the common man, walking with his hands tucked into his sleeves. Jacob Hoolaart, during his artistic career, served as a city official, which gave him insight into the lives of ordinary citizens. The artwork invites us to reflect on the daily lives and struggles of the working class during a time of economic hardship and social change. It is a reminder of the importance of recognizing and honoring the dignity of all individuals, regardless of their social status or economic circumstances.
