Curatorial notes
This photograph, "Huis in een bivak", made by an anonymous artist, presents us with a stark image of a house set against a somewhat barren landscape. The most striking visual element is the symmetrical design, the roof and the windows, each element echoing a sense of order and control. The X motif on the window shutters brings to mind crossed bandages, evoking a sense of protection. But this symbol dates back further: the cross, an early symbol of intersection, has resonated throughout history, appearing in the markings of early farmers, and later, emblazoned on flags and shields in times of war. The photograph’s arrangement presents a psychological tension. While the symmetry offers a sense of balance, there is a haunting, unsettling stillness. Perhaps this reflects a deeper, subconscious anxiety about order itself, which carries the potential for control, but also the potential for oppression. The symbols, though simple, tap into our collective memory, resurfacing in our modern minds to reveal the cyclical and evolving narrative of human experience.
