Rembrandt van Rijn rendered this Recumbent Lion in pen and brush, with brown ink, to achieve the shadowy effect. The lion, a symbol of strength and royalty, has long been a powerful emblem across cultures. In ancient Mesopotamia, the lion symbolized royal power and was often depicted in association with deities and kings. We find it again in biblical stories where the lion appears as a figure of both danger and majesty. Notice how Rembrandt captures the animal in a moment of repose, yet the tension in its posture hints at latent power. This duality—the king of beasts at rest—reveals a fascinating insight into the complexities of symbolic representation. Over time, the lion’s image has become a powerful force engaging viewers on a deep, subconscious level, conveying intense emotional states and ideas of authority and protection. Consider how the image of the lion has resurfaced, evolved, and taken on new meanings in different historical contexts, its essence enduring through the ages.

Rembrandt had the ability to depict poses and mental states faultlessly, and not only of people. Everything about this powerful lion indicates that Rembrandt saw it in reality and wanted to record it before it moved. The head and squinting eyes are especially well drawn. He created shadows by smudging the ink in places with his fingers.
