Curatorial notes

Honoré Daumier created this lithograph as part of his series, Robert Macaire, during the July Monarchy in France. Daumier satirizes the bourgeois aspirations and financial schemes of the time through the character of Macaire, a con man. Here, Macaire, accompanied by his gullible companion Bertrand, poses as a victim of political persecution, seeking sympathy and perhaps financial assistance. The image speaks volumes about the social climate in France, where rapid industrialization led to widespread speculation and opportunities for fraud. The institutions of the press and the burgeoning field of caricature played a crucial role in shaping public opinion and exposing social ills, yet they also became commercial enterprises themselves. To understand Daumier's art, one must delve into the history of French politics, the development of print media, and the social theories of the era. Only then can we fully appreciate the depth of his critique and the enduring relevance of his art.
