This is Helmut Hiatt’s Platter - "Georgia Arms," we don't know when it was made but it's 8 x 10 inches. Imagine Hiatt, his mind full of images, carefully decorating this platter. The monochrome scene in the center, flanked by decorative borders of flowers and geometric patterns, is so intriguing. The gazebo-like structure with figures standing on the precipice. I can almost feel the sea breeze and hear the waves crashing against the shore. I think there's a boat in the distance! I sympathize with Hiatt. He probably wanted to create a sense of place and memory. What's the place? What kind of memory? What was he thinking when he applied each brushstroke, each delicate line, to the surface? I can only imagine the conversations Hiatt was having with other artists of his time, maybe even across time, exchanging ideas and inspiring one another's creativity. It makes you wonder.
