Curatorial notes
B. Winghofer created this design for an altar with floor plan and side view with pen in brown and black, watercolor in gray and red. The absence of a date invites us to consider this artwork within the broad sweep of religious architectural traditions and their social functions. Altars, historically, are not merely places of worship but potent symbols of power, identity, and community. The design reflects the complex negotiation between the divine and the earthly. It prompts us to consider who has access to the altar, who is excluded, and what societal norms are being reinforced or challenged through its design. The artist has provided both a frontal and side view which invites us to reflect on the act of seeing and being seen within religious spaces. This design asks, whose stories are told and whose are silenced? This altar serves as a focal point where personal faith intersects with public identity.
