Duane Hanson made “Queenie II,” a sculpture that could fool you into thinking it’s a real person. There’s something so present about this work. You can tell it’s a process, a construction; the artist has worked to create a hyper realistic sculpture with polyester resin, fiberglass, and bondo. I find myself focusing on the texture of the figure's clothing. It almost makes you feel like you can reach out and touch the fabric. The way Hanson sculpts the figure’s skin, the slight sag, the folds—it’s so detailed, so real. And then there’s the cleaning cart, overflowing with supplies, each object carefully placed, adding to the narrative. This makes me think of another artist, Claes Oldenburg. Both artists share the uncanny ability to transform everyday objects into something profound. Both force us to look at the mundane with new eyes, questioning the line between reality and artifice.
