This photographic print of Reijer Doets was created by Machiel Hendricus Laddé, here in the Rijksmuseum. The sepia tones throughout are so evocative, creating a sense of stepping back in time to when it was made. I can imagine Laddé carefully composing this shot, considering the light, the pose, and the background. The final work presents a rather stern looking gentleman in a suit, looking directly at the viewer with his distinctive moustache. I wonder what Doets was thinking at the time? Was he comfortable in front of the camera, or was it an awkward, formal affair? The way Laddé has captured Doets reminds me of other portrait photographers of the time, such as Nadar, who also sought to capture the essence of their sitters. There’s a real sense of connection and intimacy. Photography, like painting, is an ongoing conversation between artists across time. Each is inspired by those who came before. Each artwork is influenced by another in a fascinating exchange of ideas and creative energy.
