Jack Davis made this cover for Sick Magazine with watercolor, capturing a chaotic battle between a kid with a bug bomb and a furious genie. The yellow background feels sunny but also kind of sickly, don't you think? Davis uses washes of color, letting the paint flow and blend. Notice how the genie's form emerges from smoky purples and blues, with these quick, dark strokes defining his angry face and the movement of his net. The paint is thin and watery, giving it a light and slightly unreal quality, like a fever dream. That little spray can, so bright and solid, becomes the hero’s weapon against the swirling, spectral threat. This reminds me of Honoré Daumier, who also used caricature to get at deeper social truths. Just like those artists, Davis finds the funny and slightly disturbing in the everyday. Art doesn't always have to be serious, right? Sometimes it can just be a bug bomb of the imagination.
