Editor: Here we have Irwin D. Hoffman's bronze sculpture, "Robert D. Hoffman," the date of which is unknown. I'm struck by the texture of the bronze. What does the use of this material signify? Curator: Consider bronze's historical associations with power and commemoration. Its durability speaks to a desire for permanence. What sort of labor would be required to produce a bronze casting of this size? Editor: I guess quite a bit of planning, not to mention the physical labor and skill involved in molding, casting, and finishing the piece. It makes me consider the value we place on such specialized craft. Curator: Exactly. By examining the material and the process of its creation, we can question the boundaries between art, craft, and industry. Editor: That’s such an interesting way to approach it, thanks! Curator: My pleasure.
