Peter Behrens created this print, "The Kiss", using woodcut and color woodcut in an edition of 100. The print’s composition is dominated by sinuous, flowing lines that define the hair of two figures in profile. These lines, rendered in shades of brown and gold, create a sense of movement and intertwining. Notice how the faces, depicted in pale tones, emerge from the elaborate tendrils of hair, drawing our attention to the focal point of their lips meeting in a kiss. The composition is rigidly symmetrical, reinforcing the theme of union and balance inherent in the subject. The surrounding blue background flattens the image and enhances the decorative quality of the graphic. The rhythmic and ornamental qualities of the work are reminiscent of Art Nouveau aesthetics, yet the bold, simplified forms and contrasting colors also hint at a move towards early modernist design principles. Behrens's strategic use of line and color creates an evocative image that transcends mere representation. The kiss becomes a visual metaphor for connection and harmony. This interplay between form and subject matter allows us to reflect on the underlying themes of the artwork.
