This undated print, "Rejoice, children! from farmer or citizen class, / This print shows you in the cattle the gold mine of the country" was created by Johannes Bouwer. The series of vignettes offer a window into the economic and social life of the Dutch Republic. Here, the labor of both men and women is depicted as essential to the prosperity of the nation, but within distinctly gendered roles. The images portray men engaged in agriculture and trade, whereas women are shown processing milk into butter and cheese. This division reinforces traditional notions of labor, yet the print also suggests a sense of collective identity connected to the land. Consider the emotional weight carried by these representations. These scenes, while seemingly idyllic, speak to the networks of labor and exchange that shaped daily life and social identity in the Dutch Republic. The print serves as both a celebration and a reflection of the values and social structures of its time.
