Curatorial notes
Dirk Arnoldus Tavenraat created this drawing of a horse's head facing left. The subtle gradations of light and shadow are achieved through delicate pencil strokes, giving the image a soft, almost velvety texture. The horse's head, rendered with anatomical precision, evokes a sense of classical naturalism. We can see how Tavenraat uses line and shading to create the illusion of three-dimensionality on a flat surface. This interplay between line and volume is key to understanding the relationship between representation and reality. The focus on the horse's head, isolated against the plain background, invites us to reflect on the nature of portraiture and the symbolic significance of the animal within artistic traditions. The formal elements of line, shadow, and composition serve to create a study that transcends mere representation. The drawing becomes an exploration of form and perception and prompts us to consider how the medium of drawing itself shapes our understanding.
