This drawing of a jug was made by Yolande Delasser at an unknown date using what looks like ink or very fine liner. It’s fascinating to consider the simplicity of form in Delasser’s work. The jug appears weightless and timeless, captured with the bare minimum of marks. Delasser’s drawing really embraces the concept of ‘less is more’. The outline is precise and economical, and you can almost feel the artist pausing, considering where to put each line. The small cluster of blue floral decoration is the only colour on the piece, and it draws your eye instantly. It’s a tender moment, that little splash of blue, giving life to the jug’s quiet form. I’m reminded of Giorgio Morandi's still life paintings. Both artists share a similar sensibility for finding beauty in the mundane, and for using simple forms to explore the nuances of light, space, and shape. Like Morandi, Delasser invites us to slow down and really *see* the beauty in the everyday object.
