Joseph Dujardin made this print of an old woman with a bonnet. The etching captures the woman in quiet contemplation, her gaze directed downwards, perhaps burdened by the weight of years or the trials of everyday life. The image itself creates meaning through visual codes and cultural references. Without further information regarding the time and place in which the artist lived and worked, it is difficult to be precise about the social conditions that shape its artistic production. We might note, for instance, the use of shadow to suggest not only the woman's downcast mood but also to evoke the sense of the "dark ages." Is this print, made by someone who signs their name in French, a comment on the structures of its time? Is it self-consciously conservative? In trying to understanding it better, we might turn to various historical resources. Research into the social history of Dujardin's cultural milieu would be essential. For now, however, the meaning of the artwork remains contingent on social and institutional context.
