Editor: This photograph by John Deusing, titled *Untitled (woman in coveralls and hat)*, shows a person in work clothes, but the high heels and jaunty hat create such a playful tension. How do you see the context influencing this image? Curator: Well, the inversion of the photographic negative challenges our perception of historical imagery itself. Workwear, often associated with the laboring classes, gains new meaning when paired with markers of leisure, prompting us to consider the politics of representation. Editor: So, it makes me think about the different roles people play. Curator: Exactly. And how those roles are shaped and presented through imagery. Deusing makes us question the supposed "truth" of a photograph and how social categories are constructed. It is something to consider isn’t it? Editor: Definitely, I will look at historical images differently now!
