Sigmund Ferdinand Ritter von Perger made this small drawing of a man and a woman in a garden, using pencil and watercolor. The materials themselves are quite modest – pencil for the underdrawing, defining the figures, and then thin washes of watercolor to fill them in. The artist's technique is delicate, verging on tentative. Notice how the monochrome palette gives a sense of immediacy, as if we're seeing a scene captured quickly, sketched from life, or perhaps copied from another source. The real skill here is the use of transparent watercolor to suggest light and shadow, adding volume to the figures and depth to the garden. The quick, informal handling of the materials seems appropriate to the image itself, as though the artist is sharing an intimate moment with us. Ultimately, this modest artwork reminds us that it’s the artist’s vision and skill – not necessarily expensive materials – that gives a work its power.
