This gelatin silver print pictures the director of the Singapore tram company's house and lawn. Just looking at the expanse of lawn, I get a sense of leisure and privilege, something solid that maybe this guy built for himself. I’m thinking about the way buildings represent aspirations, the way we project our inner selves onto the external world. What did this space mean to him? Was it a symbol of his success and stability? What might have been on his mind as he created this space? I wonder if he saw himself in the building. It makes me think about the other artists, architects, and photographers who are trying to capture something of themselves in their work. There is an ongoing exchange of ideas across time that connect creative people, each inspiring the other’s work. It embraces ambiguity and uncertainty, allowing for many different interpretations and meanings rather than fixed or definitive readings.
