This is ‘s Winters buiten’ by Arie Willem Segboer, and it was made using lithography. I wonder what it was like to make something like this. It’s one of those images made up of distinct panels. What could it have been like to be Segboer at the time of its creation? Did he begin by considering each element of the composition as a separate entity, as if they were all pieces of a puzzle? Or did he consider them together to conjure the sense of a winter’s day in the Netherlands? The colors look crisp and sharp, even though they are of a vintage style. I love the contrast between the ice skaters and the children looking out of the window. It's interesting to think of this in connection to other prints from the time, to see how artists cross-pollinate ideas, and feed off of each other’s creativity.
