Vardges Sureniants' "Salome" is hanging here in Yerevan, and it looks like it was made with oil paints. The way Sureniants applies the paint here is very controlled, with lots of detail. You can tell that he spent a lot of time on it. The textures and colors in "Salome" are so lush. The artist really pays attention to the fabrics and patterns that surround the main figure, who herself seems to be caught up in these same patterns. He uses thin layers of paint to create a kind of glow, especially in her shawl. Zooming in on the bottom of her dress, you can see thin lines of greens, blues, and reds layered on top of each other, which must have taken some time to do. Sureniants really knew his stuff. You could put this piece next to Klimt, and they would have lots to say to each other about art and storytelling.
