Curator: Callot's tiny etching, "Man with a Neckpiece, Seen from the Back," immediately struck me. There’s a vulnerability in the averted gaze that feels surprisingly contemporary. Editor: The small scale seems fitting, as if it wants to whisper rather than shout. But who are these figures in the background, and why are they armed? What social scripts are at play here? Curator: Callot was deeply enmeshed in the theatrical world. We see recurring characters from the commedia dell'arte throughout his oeuvre. Editor: This gives us insight into the cultural norms and expectations of performance. It's interesting to see how these men navigate gender roles and power dynamics within that theatrical space. Curator: Absolutely. It also reveals how early modern print culture popularized and disseminated particular social and political ideologies through accessible imagery. Editor: Thinking about it that way gives me a lot to consider.
