Editor: Here we have a page from Hokusai's Picture Album of the Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō Road. I’m immediately struck by the contrast between the rugged mountain on the left and the serene view of Mount Fuji across the water on the right. It's almost dreamlike. What do you make of it? Curator: It's a journey, isn't it? Hokusai invites us to travel not just geographically, but emotionally. Look at how the textured mountain almost bursts from the page, a wild energy contained within the album, then leads us towards a tranquil horizon. Do you feel that invitation to travel through the scenes? Editor: I do! I hadn't thought of it as an emotional journey. It’s incredible how a single page can hold such contrasting feelings. Curator: Exactly! It really makes you wonder what Hokusai wanted us to discover along the way.
