I imagine Charles Long making this sculpture, with all its oddness, in his studio. He probably spent days, weeks, maybe even months, shifting and playing with the arrangement of forms. The palette is simple - gentle pinks and light blues - but the forms are curious, like something you might find in a dream. There’s a frame-like structure, maybe a window or a doorway, inside of which, or maybe outside of which, sits a pod-like form, balanced delicately. Below, another form, textured with holes, sits atop a stand. It’s as if Long is creating a landscape of the imagination, where familiar objects are transformed into something strange and new. I wonder if Long was thinking about the way we perceive objects, and how their meaning can shift depending on their context. Maybe he was just having fun, letting his intuition guide him. All artists are in an ongoing conversation, inspiring each other’s creativity. Uncertainty allows for multiple interpretations and meanings.
