Curatorial notes

Reinier Vinkeles created this print, *Putto met een fakkel*, using etching and engraving. The fineness of line possible with these techniques allowed Vinkeles to capture the softness of the putto's form and the delicate texture of the cloud. Etching and engraving are intaglio processes, where the image is incised into a metal plate. Ink is then applied, and the surface wiped clean, leaving ink only in the incised lines. Finally, the plate is pressed onto paper, transferring the image. Consider the labour involved: each line meticulously etched or engraved, demanding precision and skill. The resulting prints, like this one, could be reproduced in multiples, making art more accessible – a reflection of changing social dynamics and the rise of a broader art market. The print medium itself democratized image-making, challenging traditional notions of artistic value tied to unique, hand-crafted objects.
