This untitled piece was made by Hassan Massoudy using watercolour, ink and paper, and is a gorgeous example of process. The marks are fluid, almost dance-like, and it's clear that Massoudy has a deep understanding of his materials. I can imagine him working quickly, letting the ink flow and the watercolor blend, creating a sense of movement and energy. It's like watching a calligraphic performance. The blue is so rich and saturated, yet it's applied in such a way that the paper still peeks through, giving the whole piece a light, airy feel. Take a look at how the brushstrokes vary in width and intensity, creating a rhythm that draws your eye across the surface. That top stroke especially is like a wave! It makes you wonder what kinds of brushes he used and how much control he had over the pigment. Massoudy reminds me a little of Brice Marden, but with a touch of something completely unique. Both artists embrace the beauty of simplicity and the power of mark-making.
