This drawing of the Chariot of Neptune surrounded by Tritons, Nymphs, and Putti was made by an anonymous artist. The image shows the Roman god Neptune triumphantly riding a chariot, surrounded by mythological sea creatures. This drawing may well be a study for a larger decorative scheme, perhaps a fresco in a wealthy patron’s palazzo in Italy. During the Renaissance, mythological subjects became popular as allegories of power, wealth, and cultural sophistication. In Florence, Rome, and Venice, the Medici, Borghese, and other powerful families used art to promote themselves. These families established academies, collected classical art, and commissioned new works from leading artists. Drawings like this one are valuable historical resources. Through the visual codes and cultural references depicted we are able to reconstruct the social conditions that shaped its production. By researching patronage, artistic training, and the display contexts of art, historians can understand how images gain meaning and power in society.
