Curatorial notes
This is Firmin Gillot’s drawing, ‘Oedipus en de sfinx, gezicht op een stadsmuur, gezelschap in een interieur en drie putti’, made in 1866. The monochrome work as a whole is tonally balanced. The organization of the image reveals a semiotic system at work. Notice how Gillot juxtaposes disparate elements such as Oedipus and the Sphinx, a cityscape, an interior scene and putti. This disjunction forces us to consider the structural relationships. The city wall is a prominent structural element, implying division and enclosure. The putti are symbolic intermediaries, hinting at themes of innocence and transition. Oedipus and the Sphinx represent confrontation with the unknown and reflect a deeper philosophical tension. Ultimately, the drawing defies singular interpretation. Its strength lies in challenging the viewer to construct meaning from fragmented signs and to engage with the interplay between tradition and modernity.
