Edward Runci made "A Surprising Figure" with oil, and though we don't know exactly when, it feels like he was enjoying a certain playful dance with color. The lilac background feels like a stage, and the flamingo pink of the towel and heels practically sing against it. Runci’s brushstrokes are smooth, almost creamy, making the image feel soft and inviting. There's a real sense of control in how he blends the tones, especially in the figure’s skin, but he lets the pink of the towel remain delightfully bold. Take a look at the dog gazing upwards – those eyes are practically begging for attention, and Runci uses the glossy black fur to create this lovely contrast with the lighter, airier tones elsewhere. Runci reminds me a little of Patrick Nagel, but with a warmer, more humorous touch. Both artists capture a certain mood, but Runci seems to be inviting us to smile, rather than just admire. It’s a reminder that art is always in conversation, borrowing and remixing ideas across time.
