Raffaele da Montelupo made these eight studies of a fighting Hercules with pen and brown ink, on paper. The artist made a series of quick sketches with his pen, capturing the dynamic struggle of Hercules in different poses. We can imagine him rapidly moving his hand across the page, and with a minimum of means, da Montelupo achieved a maximum of expression. The choice of pen and ink is itself significant; it's an accessible medium, immediate and direct, perfect for capturing fleeting ideas and exploring different compositions. The artist skillfully uses line weight and hatching to create depth and volume, bringing Hercules to life on the page. In da Montelupo's time, drawing was seen as a fundamental skill for any artist, a way to develop ideas and hone their craft. These studies offer us a glimpse into the artist's creative process, revealing the energy and dynamism that underpinned his work. By focusing on the materiality of the drawing, we can better appreciate da Montelupo’s creativity.
