Nicholas Roerich, a Russian artist, painted "Monastery, Tsang, Tibet" using tempera on board, but the exact date remains unknown. Roerich was deeply engaged with the spiritual dimensions of landscape, and this painting reflects his interests in Eastern religions and theosophy. The image creates meaning through its simplified forms and harmonious color palette. We should note that it was painted in a period when Tibet was relatively isolated from the West, and when the image of the "mystical East" was very much in vogue in Europe and the USA.
