Ito Shinsui created this woodblock print, now at the Minneapolis Institute of Art, that captures a moment of quiet reflection through its intricate composition and delicate use of colour. The woman's kimono dominates the visual field, its complex floral patterns set against a subtle background, creating a vibrant yet contained energy. The interplay between the geometric and organic shapes draws the eye, inviting a deeper contemplation of the depicted subject. The artist uses line and form to suggest a sense of interiority, hinting at the psychological depth beneath the surface. The colour palette, with its muted tones and occasional bright accents, adds to the overall mood of contemplative stillness. Consider how Shinsui manipulates texture and depth, achieving a delicate balance between flatness and dimension, blurring the boundaries between representation and abstraction. This formal tension destabilizes the traditional portrait, prompting us to look beyond the representational towards a meditation on form and perception itself.

Shinsui rarely worked for publishers other than Watanabe Shozaburo. However, during a short intermezzo from 1925 until 1927, he designed five beauty prints for Iseya Tatsugoro_, smaller than those Watanabe published.
