This print, "Hunter with a Young Woman in a Landscape and a Beggar by a Ruin," was made by Johann Georg Wille. Wille lived through the Enlightenment, a period that began to question long-held social hierarchies. Here, in two vignettes, we see a reflection on social class. In the upper scene, a hunter and a young woman are captured in what seems to be a private, perhaps romantic, moment. In the lower half, by contrast, we observe the impoverished as they gather by a ruin. These are the figures at the margins of society. The ruin itself is a poignant symbol of decay and neglect, mirroring the social neglect of the poor. Wille sets up a stark contrast in ways of living, inviting us to reflect on the systemic inequalities embedded within 18th-century society. These scenes don't just depict life; they provoke questions about who gets to enjoy beauty and leisure, and who is left to scavenge in the ruins.
