Curatorial notes
This engraving of ‘The Holy Family with John the Baptist’ was created by Nicolas de Poilly the Elder. Note how the composition is structured by contrasting light and shadow, drawing our eyes to the figures clustered around the Virgin Mary. De Poilly uses linear perspective to frame the subjects against a distant landscape, and this directs our attention to the maternal scene at the center, where the figures are arranged in a pyramidal form, a classical compositional technique to convey stability and harmony. The texture of the drapery contrasts with the smooth skin tones, enhancing the tactile quality of the image. This print does not merely depict a religious scene; it's an exploration of form, light, and space which echoes broader cultural and philosophical concerns about representation and visual storytelling. The engraving invites us to decode the underlying structures of visual communication, recognizing that its meaning is continuously shaped by our interpretations.
