This paperweight was made by Baccarat Glassworks. Though undated, its technique reveals a great deal. Known as millefiori, Italian for "thousand flowers", this method involves creating intricate glass rods, which are then arranged and fused together. This is a labor-intensive process demanding precision and skill, reflecting a highly specialized division of labor within the factory. The controlled heating, shaping, and arranging of the glass requires expertise and teamwork. The weight's smooth, transparent dome acts as a lens, magnifying the delicate floral patterns within. The use of glass, a material often associated with industry and luxury, speaks to the aspirations and values of its time. These techniques, tools and skilled traditions belong to histories of creative practices and aesthetics, alongside that of craft and fine arts. Considering the materials, making, and social context of this paperweight challenges traditional distinctions between fine art and craft.
