Editor: This drawing, "Violinist Seen from the Back," was created by Vincent van Gogh in 1887. It’s made with simple pencil strokes, but there’s something so raw and intense about it. It feels almost unfinished, capturing just a fleeting moment. What strikes you most when you look at it? Curator: You know, I’m struck by its vulnerability. Van Gogh gives us such an intimate view – from behind, no less. We’re not confronted with the violinist's expression, but we sense the dedication, the absorption in the music. I find myself wondering, what is the sound that emanates from this figure? Is it mournful, joyous, frantic? Does the figure even *know* we are looking at them? It feels almost like overhearing a secret, wouldn’t you agree? Editor: Yes, a secret performance almost. The quick, almost frantic lines give it this restless energy, too, like he was trying to capture something elusive before it disappeared. But what about the stylistic choice to show only the back? Was this common at the time? Curator: That's the charm of it, isn’t it? He’s defying convention. Portraits are meant to capture the face, the eyes – the soul, so we believe. But Van Gogh flips this on its head, revealing, perhaps, more of the soul through posture and gesture than a traditional portrait could. Imagine the pressure on artists during this time! Think of the bravery to ignore social demands, listening only to the melody in his head. Editor: I see what you mean! It makes you think about the hidden parts of ourselves and how they contribute to who we are. Curator: Exactly. It invites us to contemplate what isn’t explicitly shown, the silent symphony happening within the violinist and, perhaps, within ourselves. I'm now feeling ready to go practice. It really inspires me to go create my own tunes.
