Curatorial notes
Gaspare Diziani created this sketch, "Madonna auf Wolken, von einem Heiligen verehrt," using a delicate application of graphite on paper. At first glance, the composition unfolds as a series of ethereal forms emerging from the textured ground of the paper. The figures of the Madonna, child, and saint are rendered with quick, almost fleeting lines, creating a sense of movement and spiritual energy. Diziani’s approach to line and form breaks down traditional representations into their most basic, expressive elements. This deconstruction invites us to question the nature of religious iconography and the visual language used to convey it. Note how the interplay between the solid figures and the indeterminate space destabilizes conventional perspective. It challenges the viewer to engage with the artwork not as a depiction of a scene, but as an exploration of form, line, and the very act of seeing.
