This is Pierre Drevet's portrait of Oliver Cromwell, made sometime between 1663 and 1738 using etching and engraving. Drevet’s depiction of Cromwell emerges from a complex history of political and social upheaval in England. Cromwell, a polarizing figure, led the Parliamentarian forces during the English Civil War, ultimately leading to the execution of King Charles I and the establishment of the Commonwealth. Drevet, working decades later, engages with Cromwell's controversial legacy. Note the visual cues of power, like Cromwell's armor, juxtaposed with the starkness of death embodied in the hanging animal. This speaks volumes about the complex relationship between leadership, violence, and mortality. The portrait captures Cromwell’s stern gaze, a reminder of his unyielding conviction and the profound impact he had on the shaping of English identity.
