This is a drawing entitled "Wolken en een studie" by George Clausen. Clausen, who lived from 1852 to 1912, made this study with pencil on paper. Born in London to a family of German and Scottish descent, Clausen occupied a complex social position as an artist of immigrant background navigating the British art world. His identity as an outsider may have influenced his perspective and artistic vision. Clausen's artistic practice often involved sketching outdoors. With this work, he observes the transience of natural phenomena such as clouds, and a landscape with a building. Clausen's landscapes do not maintain traditional representations; instead, they open a space for exploring one’s emotional relationship with nature. How does the artwork shape our understanding of nature and our place within it? How might it reflect broader societal issues related to environmentalism and our relationship with the land?
