This sketch and colour notes was made by Niels Larsen Stevns, we don’t know exactly when, but it gives a great insight into his working processes. It's like peeking over the artist's shoulder, right? Larsen Stevns is using a pencil and a simple sheet of paper, capturing these dynamic figures and architectural space with such immediacy. The marks are light, quick, exploratory. It's all about process, about figuring things out. Look at the top half, the figures are almost dancing. The dove emitting light. The composition is starting to come together but it’s not overworked. The bottom half shows architectural details, plus written notes. It’s all so spontaneous. This reminds me of other artists who use drawing as thinking – Philip Guston or Cy Twombly. Art isn't about answers; it's about the questions we ask and the journeys we take while making it.
